Stratford Upon Avon
Hello, dear readers!
Greg and I just had the most enchanting time exploring Stratford-upon-Avon. Here’s our personalised guide to the must-visit spots and some tips on how to make the most of them:
The Royal Shakespeare Theatre:
This was a highlight for us. As major theatre buffs, we were thrilled to see a play in Shakespeare’s hometown. The theatre is a beautiful Grade II listed building, offering a rich blend of history and culture. Make sure to book your tickets online in advance for a Shakespearean experience.
We were treated to amazing seats to the Box of Delights.
The RSC has lots multiple bars and restaurants to choose from during half time!
Additionally, there is a tower open from 11-4pm that is free of charge to go up and view the whole of stradford.
Some fun history :
Elisabeth Scott – A Trailblazer in Architecture: Elisabeth Scott was a pioneering British architect, born on September 20, 1898. She achieved a remarkable feat by designing the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, which later became known as the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. This made her the first woman to design an important public building in Britain
The Design Competition and Controversy: In 1927, Scott entered a competition to design a replacement for the original Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, which had burned down. Her win was groundbreaking, especially considering she was competing against seventy-one other entries. However, her victory wasn’t without controversy. Some suggested the design wasn’t entirely her own, although this was disputed. Her proposal was overseen by Maurice Chesterton, and she was assisted by two fellow Architectural Association students, Alison Sleigh and John Chiene Shepherd
Stratford Town Walk
We kicked off our adventure with Stratford Town Walk’s guided tour. It’s a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the town’s history and Shakespeare’s influence. These walks are available every day, even Christmas! You can book online and enjoy a stroll through history.
The Stratford Town Walk, established in 2002 by John and Helen Hogg, is a premier guided tour service in Stratford-upon-Avon. It offers a variety of tours, including the original Town Walk, which focuses on the town’s history and Shakespearean connection, and the intriguing Ghost Walk, exploring Stratford’s darker history. The guides are experienced and knowledgeable, offering entertaining and informative tours.
Additionally, the service includes special tours like the Ghost Cruise and the Shakespeare Cruise, developed in partnership with Bancroft Cruisers. Adapting to changing needs, they introduced social distancing walks during the Covid-19 pandemic. Stratford Town Walk also contributes to the community by raising funds for local charities, including the cancer unit at Stratford Hospital.

This unique setting, celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2010, offers visitors an immersive experience amidst tropical blossoms, fish-filled pools, and waterfalls, all themed around the ancient Maya civilization with replicated artifacts.
The Butterfly Farm is home to a diverse range of species. In the Rainforest Flight Area, hundreds of butterflies from around the world flutter freely. But it’s not just about butterflies; the farm also houses green iguanas, seed-eating birds, and small frogs known as Epipedodates tricolour. The Discovery Zone provides an educational insight into the lifecycle of butterflies, and visitors might even witness the magical moment of a butterfly emerging from its pupa.
