 Where Are The Halls??

They’re at the Gannaga Lodge

Hey there, lovely people!

If you’re itching for a tale of tranquility (with a dash of adventure), you’ve clicked on the right post. Greg and I recently spent four enchanting days in the Karoo, and let me tell you, it was nothing short of magical. Our home away from home? The Gannaga Lodge, affectionately dubbed the “Peace Maker.” And believe me, it lives up to its name.

From the moment we stepped into this oasis, the idea of conflict felt like a distant memory. Even when Greg and I unintentionally embarked on a 35km ‘nature walk’ (that’s one way to put it), not a single cross word was exchanged. If that’s not the power of peace, I don’t know what is!

The wildlife at Gannaga is like stepping into a National Geographic documentary, minus David Attenborough’s commentary (though I did my best impression). With over 60 breeds of birds, it’s a twitcher’s paradise. “Wow” is right! And the guest list doesn’t end there: we spotted Weiland, springboks, ostriches, the occasional snake, rabbits, and more. For the full rundown, check out our dedicated wildlife blog post!

Now, let’s talk about the heart and soul of Gannaga—the staff. These folks are the real MVPs. They welcomed us with open arms, making us feel like family from the get-go. After arriving post-dinner time, Sipho, the world’s most accommodating barman, whipped up a cereal feast with warm milk that we devoured in the bar. He then showed us to our room, which I can only describe as a slice of heaven on earth.

Pro tip: Time your showers. Greg learned the hard way that cold showers are no joke. The sweet spot for a warm, cozy shower is between 8:30-10 am and 6-9 pm. You’re welcome!

The culinary experience? Delightful. Sure, they’ve got some exotic offerings (sheep head, anyone?), but for those with a less adventurous palate, the burgers are a safe bet, and the omelettes? Chef’s kiss!

For the early risers and sunset lovers, there’s a toasty pool that offers views worth waking up for. Just a heads-up for my fellow frog-phobes: Mikayla, the ever-so-gracious manageress, will happily evict any amphibious intruders for you. I may or may not have taken her up on that offer…

Here’s a little secret: there’s zero phone signal at the lodge. And the Wi-Fi? Let’s just say it’s taking a ‘less is more’ approach. But honestly, it was a blessing. Greg and I reveled in the chance to disconnect and focus on each other (I do love his undivided attention). So, bring that book you’ve been meaning to read, find a cozy spot on the patio, and indulge in some quality ‘me’ time with a mocktail—or in my case, a Super M.

For the hunting enthusiasts, Gannaga’s got you covered. While we didn’t delve into that this trip, Greg’s already planning his return for hunting season. As for me, I might just sit that one out.

In a nutshell, Gannaga Lodge is where you go to disconnect from the hustle and bustle and reconnect with yourself (and nature, and your partner, and… well, you get the picture). So pack your bags, leave your worries at the door, and let the Karoo work its magic.

Until next time, keep it real and keep exploring!

With love and a hint of Karoo dust,

Jess & Greg
